What the scanner reads

Car name

Printed under the blister, matched against 18,800+ Hot Wheels releases from 1990 to 2026.

Collector number

The 95/250 in the corner pins down the exact mainline release and year.

Series and position

HW Dream Garage 5/10, Car Culture sets, Silver Series and Team Transport.

Rarity

Treasure Hunts, Super Treasure Hunts and premium chases (the 0/5 cards) are flagged in the catalog.

When several releases share a name, like a casting that came out in three colors, the numbers on the card decide. If they are not readable, Hunt64 shows the closest releases with their photos so you can pick yours.

Prices from collectors

Hunt64 shows two numbers for a car: the median of what collectors paid, and the median of what they think it is worth. They come from 74,000+ price entries made in the app, not from old auction listings. Add your own prices or go Pro to see them for every car.

Browse them without the app in the Hot Wheels price guide, or see this year's Super Treasure Hunt list.

Get a clean scan

  1. Hold the card close, so it fills most of the frame.
  2. Keep the car name at the bottom of the card sharp and free of glare.
  3. For a loose car, photograph the base where the name is stamped.
  4. Not found? Search by the toy number on the back of the card.

Why the model name is not enough

Search "Ferrari F40 Hot Wheels value" and you get a range too wide to use, because there is not one 2026 Ferrari F40 Competizione. There are two, on the same card art, from the same pegs:

2026 Ferrari F40 CompetizioneCollectors paidValued at
Regular mainline (JJJ31)$3.99$11.11
Super Treasure Hunt (JJM17)$3.42$176.39

Same casting, same price at the register, about fifteen times the value. A value checker that stops at the model name averages the two, which is wrong for both. The same goes for recolors, Silver Series and Premium versions of a mainline casting, and chases: the numbers on the card separate them, which is why the scanner reads them. Every code on the card is explained in our toy number guide.

Scanner vs the other ways to check a value

eBay sold listings show real sales, but mix in shipping, lots, damaged cards and the odd wild auction, and you have to identify the exact release before you can search for it. Good for rare cars, slow for everything else.

Price guide websites and books help with older and well-known castings, but lag behind new releases, and modern mainline cars rarely get their own entries.

A scanner app answers the question at the pegs, with the card in your hand. Most collectors use both: the scanner for the everyday hunt, sold listings for the rare car they are thinking about selling. For the bigger picture, see what Hot Wheels are really worth.

Honest limits

  • A Super Treasure Hunt shares card art with the regular release, so you confirm which one you have.
  • New releases need a few weeks for prices: a median is published after five collectors contribute.
  • A blurry or far-away photo cannot be read. Fill the frame with the card and scan again.
  • Prices are community medians, not offers: what collectors paid and believe, not what a buyer pays tomorrow.

Questions

Is the Hot Wheels scanner free? +

Yes. Scanning is free and unlimited on every plan, with no credits, daily limits or ads. The free plan holds 100 cars. Community prices are free on hunt64.app/cars; in the app they unlock with Pro, or for any car once you add your own price. Pro also removes the 100-car limit and has a one-week free trial.

Does it work on iPhone and Android? +

Yes. Hunt64 is on the App Store and Google Play, and scans work the same on both.

Can it tell a Treasure Hunt or Super Treasure Hunt? +

Every release in the catalog carries its rarity: Treasure Hunt, Super Treasure Hunt, and premium chase (the 0/5 cards). A Super Treasure Hunt uses the same card art as the regular release, so when a casting has both, Hunt64 shows them side by side and you confirm the one in your hand: Spectraflame paint, Real Riders rubber tires and a TH logo on the car.

Does it scan loose cars? +

Carded cars scan best, because the card prints the name and numbers. For a loose car, photograph the base so the name stamped underneath is readable.

Does it scan Matchbox? +

Matchbox scanning arrives in the next app update, with a catalog of 3,800+ Matchbox releases and Super Chase flags. Until then, Matchbox cars go into the same collection as quick manual adds.

What if the scan does not find my car? +

You can search the catalog by name or by the toy number printed on the back of the card, or add the car by hand. Hold the card so it fills the frame and the name at the bottom is sharp, and scan again.

How does it know what a car is worth? +

From collectors. Hunt64 users record what they paid for each car and what they value it at, and Hunt64 publishes the median for a release once at least five collectors have contributed, so one outlier sale cannot move it. That is 74,000+ price entries so far.
